Armenia is among the countries with free internet, but its democracy index has declined

The international human rights organization Freedom House has published a report indicating that Armenia is ranked among countries with free internet. In 2024, Armenia scored 74 points in this report.

When looking at neighboring countries, Georgia has an equal score to Armenia, Iran scored 12, Turkey 31, and Azerbaijan 34.

However, despite this report, it’s important to mention other indicators published by Freedom House, where Armenia’s scores are average or below average. Specifically, the democracy index for Armenia in 2024 was rated at 34.52/100. Comparing it to the previous year, although the numbers are nearly the same, there is a decline in Armenia’s democracy score. In 2023, the democracy score was 35.12/100. With this year’s score, Armenia is considered to have a transitional or hybrid regime.

The neighboring countries have the following democracy scores: Georgia 34, Azerbaijan 1, with no available data yet for Iran and Turkey.

It’s also important to note Armenia’s global freedom index. Compared to the previous year, this score increased by 2 points, reaching 74.54. According to this indicator, Armenia is classified among partly free countries. However, in previous years, Armenia had a higher score; in 2019, the global freedom index was rated at 46.51 points.

For comparison, Armenia’s neighboring countries have the following global freedom scores: Georgia 58, Iran 11, Turkey 33, and Azerbaijan 7. Nagorno-Karabakh also received a rating of -3 by the organization.
