Fees for obtaining or renouncing Armenian citizenship have increased.

At the Armenian Government session, changes to the fees for obtaining and renouncing citizenship were approved.

The fees, which had not been changed since 1997, have now been raised. Previously, the fee for obtaining citizenship was 1,000 AMD, but it has now increased to 50,000 AMD. The fee for renouncing citizenship, which was previously 25,000 AMD, has been set at 150,000 AMD.

It is also proposed that the revised state fee regulation should not apply to refugees, including compatriots forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh. The proposal suggests exempting all refugees from the requirement to pay the fee for applying for citizenship.

Any person over the age of 18, residing in or living legally in Armenia, or residing abroad without Armenian citizenship, has the right to apply for Armenian citizenship if:

  • They have permanently resided in the Republic of Armenia for the past three years as prescribed by law,
  • They can communicate in Armenian, and
  • They are familiar with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

The procedure for checking knowledge of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian language for those obtaining citizenship is defined by a decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia.
