Armenian railways may connect to Azerbaijan and Turkey: statements from Russia.

He stated that the parties will assess the technical and financial conditions for restoration to subsequently connect these sections to the railways of Azerbaijan and Turkey. The length of the sections to be restored will be 1.6 km at the border with Azerbaijan and 12.4 km at the border with Turkey.

According to Overchuk, the restoration of the railway sections will provide Russia with the possibility of direct railway communication with Nakhchivan and Turkey—towards Mediterranean Sea ports—and communication with Iran—towards the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Russia added that work is being carried out in the region towards unblocking all disrupted routes, including the possibility of restoring railway communication between Russia and Georgia through the territory of Abkhazia.

It should be noted that this initiative is related to the appeal of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, to his Russian partners. In 2008, Armenia’s railway infrastructure was handed over to the concession management of the South Caucasus Railway (SCR) for 30 years, with the possibility of a 10-year extension.
