The title “Artsakh” will not be used at the Olympic Games
The title of Ara Gevorgyan’s composition “Artsakh” will no longer be mentioned in the competition program of the figure skaters representing Armenia at the Winter Olympic Games; instead, it will be announced as “Music by Ara Gevorgyan.”
The representatives of Armenia had previously announced that they would perform to that specific composition. Following this, the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan filed a complaint, claiming that the piece carries a political subtext.
According to international media reports, Olympic structures emphasized that political neutrality must be maintained during the Games, as the Olympic platform is intended for peaceful competition and mutual respect.
The International Skating Union (ISU) stated that the matter was discussed with the parties involved, resulting in the decision not to use the official title of the composition in the program and to mention only the author’s name.
The Winter Olympic Games in Italy commenced on February 6. Armenia is participating in the Games with five athletes: cross-country skiers Mikayel Mikayelyan and Katya Galstyan, alpine skier Harutyun Harutyunyan, and figure skaters Karina Akopova and Nikita Rakhmanin.
