Water scarcity problem is emerging in Turkey
Erol Kesici, the scientific advisor of the Turkish Nature Conservation Association, stated that 186 of Turkey’s 240 lakes have dried up in the last 60 years. Other lakes may also suffer the same fate due to pollution and drought. The specialist noted that all of these are mainly caused by the late identification of problems and the lack of appropriate solutions.
There are almost no lakes left in the country. The water level has dropped significantly and continues to drop. Added to this is the increasing discharge of chemical waste into lakes. As a result, the fish population also decreases and the lakes are filled with overgrown macro and micro plants.
He suggested controlling the irrigation of agricultural areas and developing solutions to prevent the problem from deepening.
