Today, Armenia will participate in the BRICS summit. What is it?
On October 22-24, the BRICS summit will take place in Kazan.
Leaders from more than 20 countries will participate in the summit, and Armenia will also be represented. This was announced by Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan in September.
BRICS member countries include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This coalition serves as a counterbalance to the West.
The population of the member countries makes up 45% of the world’s population. The combined economies of these countries amount to $28.5 trillion, which constitutes 28% of the global economy.
Russian officials have noted that 30 more countries are seeking to join BRICS or establish closer ties with the group.
There are, however, contradictions between member states. Apart from tensions between India and China, there are also disagreements between Egypt and Ethiopia, as well as between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
